A MAN who was shot in the leg in Prospect Park last night is recovering in hospital after undergoing emergency surgery.

The 23-year-old from the Reading area suffered a single bullet wound at around 8pm yesterday.

Police are still on scene combing for evidence and the gunmen remains at large.

It is not believed the wider public are at risk and the attack is being treated as “targeted”.

Following the shooting police helicopters and a large number of officers, including a dog handler, rushed to the area.

The victim's condition has been described as “serious but not life threatening”.

A 26-year-old man from Reading has since been arrested in connection with the incident on suspicion of affray.

However a Thames Valley Police spokesman stressed the wider investigation is still ongoing and they are continuing to appeal for witnesses or information about a black man in his 20s or 30s.

She said: "As part of the investigation this one man has been arrested on suspicion of affray.

"Our investigation remains ongoing."

Earlier in the day Caribbean festival Park Lime had been hosted in the park but the force spokesman said: “We can confirm that there is no information at this stage to suggest a connection between the carnival and this incident.”

Local Policing Area Commander for Reading, Superintendent Stan Gilmour said: “I would like to reassure the public that this attack appears to have been targeted against an individual and does not represent a threat to the community.

“A thorough investigation is being carried out, which means there will be an increased police presence in the area in the coming days. If you have any concerns or information to pass on then please approach one of our officers.

“Tilehurst Road remains closed at this time. We would like to thank the public for their co-operation.”

At least two cars that did not appear to be police vehicles could be seen inside the area by the roundabout at the south side of Honey End Lane.

Sniffer dogs were also spotted inside the cordon as well as an officer wearing a forensic suit, who appeared to be inspecting one of the vehicles.

Detective Inspector Jon Groenen, of force CID based at Reading police station, said: “I would like to appeal to anyone who witnessed this offence or has any information to contact police.

“If you do not want to speak directly to the police you can contact the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111. No personal details are taken, information is not traced or recorded and you will not go to court.”
