FIREFIGHTERS were sent on a wild goose chase after searching in vain for a pigeon trapped in a chimney shute.

The specialist heavy rescue equipment from Dee Road firestation was sent to Westwood Road in Tilehurst at 9.30am after a bird was heard trapped in a chimney.

The crew took the chance to practice using search and rescue equipment as they tried to catch the pigeon.

Watch manager Mark Jones said: "We took the heavy rescue unit because it's got all the urban search and rescue equipment.

"We used a snake eye camera, usually used to search for people in collapsed buildings, to look through an inspection hole.

"After an hour of searching we couldn't find it."

He said they thought the bird may have flown the coop on its own.
