A MAN has been hospitalised after being struck on the head three times while walking through Tilehurst on Friday evening.

The 42-year-old was on School Road close to the Prince of Wales pub when he was attacked from behind.

After falling to the floor the man who assaulted him went on to kick him as he was on the ground.

The attack ended when a passerby stepped in and chased away the offender.

Police are appealing for anyone who may have witnessed the assault between 7.30pm and 8pm to get in touch.

Officers have described the man who unleashed the violent outburst as white, in his twenties, around 5ft 9ins tall and with short dark hair.

He was wearing a black padded jacket, black jeans and black shoes.

The victim had to be taken to the Royal Berkshire Hospital after suffering injuries to his face but has since been discharged.

Investigating officer PC Emily Morris from Reading police station said: "I would like to ask anyone who saw or heard anything or has any information at all about this assault to please contact me via the non-emergency number 101."
