THE FAMILY of a former Reading FC player and groundsman are raising funds for debilitating conditions.

Donations from former players and Reading FC's academy manager have also poured in for Gordon Neate, who is living in a care home after being diagnosed with dementia.

Mr Neate made more than 100 appearances for the royals between 1956 and 1958.

The former defender, who also worked as the club's groundsman, is described as a kind and generous man by his daughter, Jeanette Rackley.

Mrs Rackley, along with some of her family members, are talking part in the Reading Memory Walk in his honour.

Mrs Rackley said: "It was my daughters idea originally, she wanted to raise £150 but it's already gone up to more than £1000.

"Jem Karacan and Eamonn Dolan have both contributed, and that was even before we found out about Eamon's own cancer problems.

The 52-year-old added that despite suffering with the memory condition, Mr Neate still has very fond memories of his footballing days, and the family have enjoyed visiting him and sharing messages from fans.

"The more we can raise awareness and money hopefully others won't have to go through this in the future."

The walk is in Prospect Park, Tilehurst, on Sunday September 13.
