A WOMAN came home to find to her flat door charred and smoking after a suspected arson attack this morning.

She returned to the first floor home in Coventry Road, Newtown, at around 6.10am when she spotted the smoke and fled outside.

Firefighters and police then rushed to scene which was cordoned off until this afternoon while forensic investigators combed for clues.

The fire is being treated as arson and a 22-year-old man from Reading is being quizzed by detectives after being arrested earlier this morning.

The man was scooped up on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life.

No one was injured by the flames.

Investigating officer Det Con Sukhpreet Singh, from Reading police station, said: "Detectives are investigating this serious incident and I would like to appeal to any witnesses who saw or heard anything suspicious in the Coventry Road, Manchester Road or Liverpool Road areas at around the time of the fire.

"If you have any information which could assist the investigation please speak to police."

Anyone who saw anything this morning is asked to call Thames Valley Police on the non-emergency number 101.
