THE DAVIS Cup trophy visited the University of Reading’s SportsPark on Friday, May 28.

The event was arranged to mark the University’s planning application for refurbished tennis facilities and a new tennis dome on the Whiteknights campus.

More than 120 school children and members of the public took park in a tennis coaching session and had their photographs taken with Britain’s second most prestigious tennis trophy.

The University and the Lawn and Tennis Association have plans to jointly fund the dome, which will bring three new hard-surfaced tennis courts in an all-weather facility brought to the campus.

In addition, the University’s five existing hard courts will be refurbished.

Iain Akhurst, Director of the University of Reading SportsPark, said: “The proposed facilities will offer future generations a chance to play tennis in top-class facilities all year round.

“The tennis dome will be accessible to students and members of the community in all weathers, meaning that this is a true investment in the future of tennis in Reading.

“We are delighted to host the Davis Cup Trophy to be able to mark this investment and it is pleasing that so many from the local community joined us to celebrate this.”

The planning application was set for consideration by Reading Borough Council at a planning committee meeting this week. If granted, work will begin this summer.
