A CYCLIST has been left with a suspected broken leg after a crash near the Royal Berkshire Hospital earlier this morning.

The rider collided with a Mercedes at around 8.40 this morning whilst he used the pedestrian crossing by the hospital.

Police and ambulance crews were rushed to Craven Road at the junction with London Road after the driver of a black Mercedes fled the scene.

A spokesman for Thames Valley Police said: "We were called at 8.40 this morning to Craven Road near the junction with London Road.

"We were called to a road traffic collision involving a cyclist and a car.

"The cyclist has a broken leg."

The cyclist, a 41-year-old from Reading, was taken to the hospital but has since been discharged.

Commuters were stranded in long queues as traffic backed up along the road.

One driver, who did not want to be named, said: "I saw a cyclist was lying in the road.

"There was an  ambulance parked right outside the hospital with paramedics treating the person on the floor.

"One of them had to stop the traffic so no cars could get through."

A spokesman for South Central Ambulance Service said: "The call came in at 8.37 to reports of a collision involving a car and a push-bike.

"We sent one ambulance crew who assessed and treated one patient who was taken to the Royal Berkshire Hospital."

Police officers are appealing for anyone with information to come forward calling 101 quoting URN 224 of 3/8/17.
