THE Leader of West Berkshire Council was visiting his son in France when he was involved in a horrific crash which killed his wife, a source has revealed.

Newbury MP Richard Benyon and nearby residents have paid tribute to Grizelda Croft, better known as Zelda, describing her as a "wonderful woman".

Cllr Croft, who took up his position as leader of the council in 2015, was on holiday with his 69-year-old wife, pictured, in Europe when they were involved in the devastating collision.

The 67-year-old Conservative politician is currently in hospital after sustaining serious injuries.

Mr Benyon said: "We are all devastated to hear to hear of this accident. Zelda was a wonderful person and will be missed by us all.

"We are all just concentrating on getting Roger home and helping him and his family recover from this dreadful accident."

Cllr Croft served as deputy-leader of the unitary authority until members chose him to replace outgoing leader Gordon Lundie in November 2015.

He was first elected to represent Thatcham South & Crookham in the 2011 local elections.

A source told the Chronicle: "I'm devastated. He and his wife had gone out to France to visit their son, he lives out there.

"It's very sad."

It is not yet known how long Cllr Croft will remain in France before he can return to his home in Hammond Close, Thatcham.

Residents in the area said they were stunned to hear the news of Zelda's tragic death, while wishing Cllr Croft a fast recovery.

Ros Cockman, said: "They are a lovely family and they've lived here as long as we have. They are a very pleasant family. My children went to school with their children. They keep themselves to themselves.

"We have been here for about 20 years so they have been here for even longer than us. Our heart goes out to the family."

Karen Dougal, added: "I knew who he was because of his role as a councillor and I say hello to him sometimes.

"I would like to pass on my best wishes to him and the family. With greatest sympathy for your loss. Praying for your speedy recovery."

Cllr Graham Jones, deputy leader of the council, will immediately take the role as leader until further notice.

Cllr Hilary Cole has been appointed as acting duputy leader.

A spokesman for West Berkshire Council added: "It is with great sadness that we can confirm that Councillor Roger Croft and his wife have been involved in a serious car accident while travelling in France.

"Roger’s wife died in the accident and Roger has been seriously injured and is currently in hospital in a stable condition. Our thoughts and condolences are with Roger, his family and friends."
