TRAGEDY dampened the spirits of this year's Reading Toy Run after a rider tragically died after completing the route.

The Rider, who was aged in his 50s and named locally as 'Pete', collapsed after part in the annual pilgrimage delivering toys to High Close School in Wokingham.

He was rushed to hospital in a life threatening condition after suffering a cardiac arrest at the side of the road, just metres from the finish line.

Hundreds of people who took part in the event came forward to pay their respects to the 50-year-old, with floods of tributes pouring in on various social media sites.

One Facebook user wrote: "My condolences to the family and friends of Pete, May you rest in peace knowing you done a great deed."

More than 2,000 riders and pillions took part in the ride from Foster Wheeler in Earley to nearby Barnardo's School.

Jane Spiller, one of the organisers said: "Unfortunately one rider had a heart attack after taking part in the ride.

"He parked up at the side of the road and was taken to hospital where he passed away."

Emergency services rushed to the scene where the rider collapsed and it immediately became clear he needed emergency treatment.

He was taken to Royal Berkshire Hospital where he was sadly declared dead.

A spokesman for South Central Ambulance Service added: "The call came in at 14.46 on Rectory Road, Wokingham.

" A male in his 50s had been taking part in a motorbike ride and collapsed.

"We sent an officer, rapid response vehicle, and an ambulance.

"He was taken in a life threatening condition to the Royal Berkshire Hospital."
