POLICE have renewed their appeal for information after a shocking attack left a man with a horrific eye injury.

The victim, a 61-year-old man, was left 'traumatised' after he was brutally beaten as he was walking towards Caversham near Reading Bridge on October 4 at around 11pm.

A group of teenagers on bicycles started cycling around him.

When the man asked the youngsters to stop, one of the gang punched him in the face, leaving him with a severe eye injury.

The victim, who wishes to remain anonymous, told the Chronicle: "I was just saying 'get me to hospital because I am going to lose my eye'.

"He just swung his fist at me so hard. He recoiled in horror as blood just started pouring out.

"There was a tear on the retina of the periphery of my vision. They operated to prevent it from spreading.

"I couldn't get my phone to work because I couldn't see. One of the girls was giggling, it was awful. I was screaming and shouting for help."

Police officers investigating the case are yet to track down any of the youngsters responsible and the victim has been released from hospital.

The attacker was described as a mixed raced boy, aged around 15 or 16 and was 6ft tall. He was riding an orange Readybike at the time of the incident, shortly after 11pm.

A police spokesman said: "The victim was walking from the railway station towards Caversham when he was approached by a group of youths, some of whom were on bicycles.

"They rode their bikes around him and when he asked them to stop, one of the group assaulted him by punching him in the face.

"The victim was taken to hospital with a serious eye injury. He has since been discharged but will require surgery as a result of the incident."

Another member of the gang was described as a black boy, of a similar age to the attacker and around 5ft 6ins. He was stocky with black hair which was short at the sides and long on the top.

Police believe a white boy on an orange Readybike, a short white girl aged around 14 and another young white boy and girl were also involved.

Investigating officer, Amy-Jane Rogers, of Reading CID, said: "We are continuing to carry out an investigation into this incident, three months on from it taking place. No arrests have yet been made.

"This was a completely unprovoked attack, which left the victim with serious facial injuries, for which he required hospital treatment.

"Understandably, he has been left traumatised by this.

"If you have any details which you think could relate to the incident, no matter how insignificant they seem, I would encourage you to contact us.
