CAMPAIGNERS battling against plans to relocate a primary school continue to launch objections as a funding consultation draws to a close.

The Education Funding Agency (EFA) is offering £1.36m as part of plans to relocate The Heights Primary School to Mapledurham Playing Fields.

However, members of Mapledurham Playing Fields Action Group (MPFAG) argue alternative proposal called 'Fit4All' should be approved.

Reading Borough Council's 10-week consultation will end on September 25 and members of the public have been encouraged to submit their thoughts before the deadline.

Rivermead Leisure Centre will host the final public drop-in session on Monday evening between 6pm and 8pm.

Councillor Deborah Edwards, chair of the Mapledurham Playing Fields Trustees sub-committee, explained: "The drop-in sessions are designed to provide information and answer any questions people have about the proposals.

"I would encourage as many people as possible to take part in the consultation before September 25 and give their views on which of the two proposals could provide the most benefit to residents in terms of future leisure provision.

"I would like to thank everyone who has taken part in the consultation so far and remind residents that it is not too late to have your say."

It is thought the EFA's offer would inject new life into the playing fields, but there has been sturdy opposition to the plans from action groups, football clubs and governing bodies, including Sport England and the Football Association.

The Fit4All campaigners say the loss of green space is unacceptable and would seek to lease the land for fundraising purposes.

Members of MPFAG met on Tuesday evening at Highdown School, as they continued to make objections to the EFA's proposal.

Martin Brommel chair of MPFAG, added: "It is evident from the numerous compelling planning objections that many people have already spotted flaws in the EFA proposal, in terms of both the practicality of the site of the school and the detrimental impact to the recreational amenities.

"We would like to make sure that there is as wide and comprehensive understanding of these as possible."
