A BLAZE gutted a bathroom after a fuse box in an airing cupboard caught alight last night, firefighters have revealed.

Firefighters spent more than three hours battling the flames at a property in Kiln Road, Caversham.

The fire destroyed the bathroom and began to spread to the bedrooms as crews doused it with water, but luckily the occupants had escaped the home in time.

One of the residents sliced his foot on a shard of glass while escaping the blaze but he was not seriously injured.

Crew Manager Jeff Wright said: “We were called to a big fire at around 2am.

“It started in the bathroom, it was a fuse box in the airing cupboard which sparked and it developed into a fully developed fire.

“Everyone got out of the house but there was a lot of smoke damage to the property.

“One of the occupants cut his foot on some glass coming out but he wasn’t seriously injured.”

Fire officers from Caversham Road Fire Station were also called to an electrical fire in Priory Avenue earlier in the evening.

In similar circumstances, a fuse board caught fire but the residents escaped unharmed.
