A GANG who sent a man to hospital with head injures after an early morning attack in Caversham have forced police to step up patrols across the area.

The victim, in his 20s, is undergoing treatment for head and leg injuries in the Royal Berkshire Hospital after being attacked by up to five men.

He was rushed to the hospital shortly after the 4.30am attack and now Thames Valley Police are increasing patrols in the area to reassure residents.

Investigating officer Detective Sargent Will Crowther said: "We are appealing for any witnesses or anyone with information regarding this assault to come forward.

"We have increased reassurance patrols and officers are on scene whilst we continue to investigate."

A Thames Valley Police spokesman said: " We are appealing for witnesses following an assault in Caversham, Reading.

"At around 4.30 this morning a man in his 20s was assaulted in Alston Walk.

"He was assaulted by a group of between three and five men.

"The victim received injuries to his head and legs and is receiving ongoing treatment in hospital.

"Anyone with any information should call the 24-hour Thames Valley Police enquiry centre on 101 quoting reference 158 29/12/16."
