Swan Shredder and Mayor's Passage: public suggestions for pedestrian bridge name revealed

Now known as Christchurch Bridge, the naming of the £5.9m crossing was put into the hands of Reading residents through a series of public polls.

Following Reading Borough Council's most successful resident vote to date the full list of proposed names has been released.

They included paying homage to local figures ranging from Ricky Gervais and Reading Elvis to Trooper Potts VC and Kate Winslet.

Politically minded neighbours attacked the project with Pointless Bridge with a Point on Top, We Cut Social Care to Pay for this Bridge and Bridge Over the River, Why?

The more facetious proposals could have seen the structure called Wibbly Wobbly Bridge or simply the Spanner.
