IT'S OFFICIAL - the new pedestrian and cycle bridge over the Thames has been named Christchurch Bridge after a public vote.

Nearly 2,000 people took part in the poll to christen the £5.9m structure in the council's most popular poll to date.

The 39m crossing will now take its name from the neighbouring Christchurch Meadows - so called because the dean of Christchurch Cathedral in Oxford acquired the land before selling it on to build the public park.

Cllr Tony Page, deputy council leader announced the results at last night's full council meeting.

He said: "The clear winner of the public vote is therefore Christchurch Bridge - a name which has both a historical connection and one directly relevant to the bridge surroundings.

"I hope everybody agrees that it ticks both boxes."

Residents were given three weeks to pick from a shortlist of four names which also included Cusden Bridge, De Montford Bridge and William Marshal Bridge.

A total of 1,847 people took part in the online poll which closed on Monday.

Cllr Page added: "That is the biggest response to a council consultation I can ever remember, and I everybody who took the time to participate."
