THE EXACT location being proposed for The Heights Free School has been revealed.

These designs show the buildings and grounds of the planned primary school occupying the north-west corner of Mapledurham Playing Fields, opposite the pavilion.

The school's trust claims they would need no more than five per cent of open green space and more detailed plans will be put on display at a series of public events.

Last summer the controversial bid to open a free school in Caversham Heights reached a pinnacle when the Education Funding Agency (EFA) - who are bankrolling the scheme - held a public consultation to find a permanent site.

Currently housed on a temporary site in Gosbrook Road the school's leaders are seeking a place to call home and residents voted overwhelmingly in favour of the playing fields out of the five options given.

Campaigners from Mapledurham Playing Field Action Group say they remain committed to stopping the school from being built there.

Martin Brommell, chairman of the group, said: "We were promised by the EFA and Reading Borough Council that no land would be lost on Mapledurham Playing Fields but their proposal completely imposes on the green belt.

"They said they would not take more land than they needed but if you look at the picture it is more than five per cent they are taking up.

"Also there's no road or access point shown and these are the real issues residents in this area are concerned about."

A spokesperson for The Heights Trust said: "We are delighted to share our proposals for a permanent home for The Heights Primary School with parents and the local community and seek their feedback on our plans.

"This consultation looks to identify what community benefits the new school could provide for users of the playing fields and how the facilities there could be enhanced as a result of locating the school on the site.

"We hope that as many people as possible will come along to our consultation events. Details of these have also been made available online at www.anewhomefortheheights.com"

The meetings are on March 21, 5pm - 9pm at Church House, 59 Church Street, Caversham, RG4 8AX and March 22, 3pm - 7pm at Mapledurham Golf Club, Chazey Heath, RG4 7UD.
