CAMPAIGNERS have failed in their bid to prevent the relocation of their local post office.

Proposals to shift the Woodcote Way branch 650 metres were slammed by protesting residents amid fears of increased walking distance and lack of parking.

But they have now been rubber stamped by Post Office bosses, who say the move will improve the service.

The firm is set to shift the branch to Conisboro Avenue, Caversham, which does not sit on the same bus route as the current store, and some elderly residents claimed the distance would too far to walk.

But company chiefs say people can use a dial-a-ride service to get to the new location Protestor Robin Blackwood, 89, told the Chronicle in December: "I just find it great here (at the Woodcote Way post office) because I don't want to go into town all the time.

"It will be dreadful if they move it further away.

"I wouldn't be able to walk there which is what I do now, and that's good for me."

The Post Office admits a significant amount of responses to its consultation opposed the move, but claims other neighbours praised the plans.

It claims that parking is outside its control, but recommends nearby roads like Uplands Road can be used for a short stay.

Bosses also suggest neighbours use services like Readibus as an alternative mode of transport if they do not feel they can walk the increased distance.

The spokesman said: "Whilst we appreciate that Conisboro Stores is 650 metres from the existing branch and for some customers this will mean a longer journey, there are other customers who welcome the new location and will find it more conveniently located.

"For those unable to access the new location, Readibus is a dial a ride assisted bus service, which may provide an alternative option for customers with restricted mobility wishing to access the new branch.

"Roadside parking is restricted immediately outside the new site, however, parking is available further along Conisboro Avenue and Uplands Road. We are therefore satisfied that parking at the new location will meet the needs of customers using the Post Office."

The new store will see increased opening hours up until 9pm from Monday to Saturday and 8pm on Sundays.

The Woodcote Way branch will close Monday March 21 at 5.30pm and the new store will open the following day at 1pm.
