FOUR homes had to be evacuated last night after a roof fire broke out and threatened to spread along a terrace.

All residents managed to get out in time but two houses suffered damage to their roofs.

Five fire crews were in attendance at the height of the blaze which broke out at around 11.15pm last night.

The flames first caught in the home at the end of the row in Latimer Drive, Calcot and engulfed the roof and sections of the upper floors of the house.

It later spread to one neighbouring property but all residents had been safely evacuated by then.

Firefighter Kurt Wallin, of Dee Road fire station, said: "The roof fire was going through the roof when we got there.

"Everybody got out fine but the cause of the fire is still being investigated.

"They waited round at neighbours houses being kept warm and given tea.

"We had five pumps in attendance an aerial platform, four breathing apparatus and a couple of hose reels involved."
