Campaign: Jamie Wake is hoping to set up a radio station dedicated to Kennet Island

A COMMUNITY campaigner has been making waves about local radio.

Jamie Wake, 34, co-chair of the Kennet Island Resident's Association (KIRA), is encouraging residents to get behind his idea for "Kennet Island Radio", a station which will be exclusive to the Island and its inhabitants.

The Reading Pride trustee said: "It's just about bringing the community together. People seem really positive about it and want to get involved. It might not work, but we won't know unless we try!

"It will be for the whole Island really - the young, the old, people with special needs. For everyone, run by everyone and getting as many people represented as possible."

He has already set-up a virtual server so that, when the station goes live, residents will be able to get involved from the comfort of their own home.

The next step is to secure funding for the PRS and PPL licenses - which will give the station the rights to play commercial music.

Jamie added: "We've been speaking to the Island Lounge Café about doing fundraising and a launch party there and we're keen to get other local businesses involved too.

"In an ideal world, if we get a few advertisers then that will pay for all our annual fees."
