'Bear with us' - sewer project to begin
CONTROVERSIAL sewer repair work will begin in Tilehurst tomorrow - marking the start of 10 months of disruption for householders, traders and motorists.
From Monday, Thames Water will start to shut sections of Hildens Drive, between City Road and Chieveley Close; City Road, between Lovatt Close and Hildens Drive, and Longworth Avenue, between Hildens Drive and Ashby Drive, from Monday to Friday at 7.30am-6pm, one at a time for a maximum of six weeks each time.
The water company will first set up a temporary compound near Sainsbury's at junction 12 of the M4, where it will begin getting the site ready. The road closures will start in Hildens Drive, between Chapel Hill and Berkshire Drive, from the following Monday, with work on that section expected to take between two and four weeks.
Thames Water spokeswoman Natalie Slater said: "Once we have started the work, we will have a clearer picture of exactly how long this will take before we can move on to the next section. This is a very complicated job and we ask residents to bear with us while we get this essential work done."
The £1m project will improve the area's sewerage network and protect nearby homes - 10 of which have been flooded by raw sewage in recent months - but shop owners in Hildens Drive last month told The Chronicle that they fear for their livelihoods as they expect customers will be driven away by road diversions, and drivers kicked up a stink about the disruption it would cause to their journeys.
