A football club has taken an early season advantage by netting a deal with the council to lease Whitley Wood Recreation Ground for seven years.
South Reading Football Club, which runs 12 children's teams and one senior side, has been based at the recreation ground since it formed in 1993 and coaches around 150 boys and girls. During the 2010-11 football season, the council spent £14,341 maintaining the ground but received only £7,006 in pitch rental from local clubs. The deal will save the council £7,275 a year.
The real winner is the club because it now has the opportunity to upgrade the changing and toilet facilities to help the senior side's bid to move into the next tier of non-league football. The senior team is in the Reading League Premier Division but hopes to qualify as a Tier 7 club which could ultimately lead into the Zamaretto Southern League Division One
Chris Evans, club secretary, said: "We are very excited about being granted the lease after weeks of hard work. All players from the soccer school up to the senior team will use the facilities as home, so all players, coaches and mangers can feel like a real community club within South Reading."
Whitley ward councillor Rachel Eden said: "This agreement will allow the club to improve the facilities and will actually save the council money."
