PROTESTERS against plans for a 3,500-home mini-town have warned councillors to "keep their promises" now the election is over.

Arborfield Garrison Residents Action Group (Ag-Rag) has a litany of complaints about the scheme to cover Arborfield Garrison in homes, once the Ministry of Defence (MoD) departs, and about the way the scheme ended up in Wokingham Borough Council's (WBC) Core Strategy for development.

Chairman Martin Rutter said Arborfield councillor Gary Cowan, re-elected last week, promised to put the village "first, second and third" and should stick to his pledges.

Mr Rutter said: "Broken election promises will destroy Arborfield's rural character forever. We are expecting Gary to use his position and local knowledge to force WBC to rethink its plans."

The residents say the plans will create chaos on the roads and that there are different plans coming out of the MoD and the council.

Cllr Cowan, WBC's executive member for planning, said regional home-building targets were unlikely to be changed because the national political situation was "a terrible mess".

He said there was no chance of wholesale changes to the homes plan in Arborfield, but said: "We have to do as much tweaking and adjusting of the plans as we can to meet residents' expectations."
