LONG after the decorations came down, the winner of a charity Christmas quiz has received his prize.

David Arnott was presented with an Oxford Dictionary, Thesaurus and Wordfinder at WordPlay book and toy shop in Caversham by the quiz's author, Lindsay Mullaney.

Mr Arnott, from Purley, scored 97.5 out of 100 on the cryptic crossword-style quiz, which Mrs Mullaney described as "an excellent score".

It was the first time Mr Arnott, 52, had attempted the quiz and the IT manager said: "I am a word game lover and I love crosswords but I thought the quiz was challenging.

"I had to keep coming back to it and I'd find myself muttering the clues over and over in the evenings. I will enter next Christmas but I don't think I'll win again!"

Mrs Mullaney has raised £1,840 by selling quiz sheets for Age Concern Reading, a donation which will be spent on day trips for the elderly.

The Caversham resident, who has compiled a charity quiz almost every Christmas since 1985, said: "I chose Age Concern because charities for the elderly find it very difficult to attract donations in the way achieved by those catering for children, cancer sufferers or even animals.

"I should like to express my thanks to everyone who sold copies of the quiz and to those who sent in very generous donations with their entries."
