THE Caversham and Emmer Green police team is urging householders to start or join Neighbourhood Watch schemes.

Now called Neighbourhood and Home Watch Networks (NHWN), they involve neighbours looking out for one another's homes and sharing news of unlawful activity to thwart criminals.

NHWN schemes are credited with having a positive effect on the number of burglaries, so the plea is especially poignant because burglary is the top crime concern across the three Reading borough police areas north of the Thames.

Inspector Penny Mackenzie said: "Please consider joining your local NHWN. The networks are all about people getting together with their neighbours to take action to cut local crime and disorder.

"Networks are designed to cut crime and the opportunities for crime, help and reassure those who live in an area and encourage neighbourliness and closer communities."

For more information, contact Reading area administrator Liz Herbert on 0118 953 6250 or visit www.thamesvalley.police.uk/aboutus-watch-nhood

The next surgery for anyone wanting to discuss policing issues is on Monday, January 25, 6-7pm in the police office at Church House in Church Street.
