Chef Mike will cook up a storm

CHEF Mike Colwill is this week waiting to hear whether his talents in the kitchen will land him first place in a national competition.

Mike sharpened his knives and dusted down his apron to display his culinary talents for a cook-off heat in the National Care Awards' Chef Of The Year competition.

At the heat, at Ealing Hammersmith College in West London last week, Mike had a £5 budget and 90 minutes to prepare, cook and present a well-balanced, nutritious three-course meal.

The cook-off was filmed and the overall winner will be announced by TV personality Ruby Wax at the National Care Award gala evening at the London Hilton Metropole on Saturday, November 28.

Mike, from Caversham Park Village, leads the kitchen at Thamesfield, Henley's close care and nursing home in Wargrave Road.

He joined Thamesfield's kitchen last year and the quality of his culinary skills has brought him consistent praise from residents.

All meals, except for bread and frozen peas, are cooked from scratch and Mike uses as much local, fresh produce as possible.

The 50-year-old, who is married with twins, said: "I have never entered anything like this in my life.

"I wasn't really nervous, I just looked forward to the challenge!"
