YOUNGSTERS across Caversham have been doing their bit to help others at harvest time.

Pupils at Micklands Primary School collected more than 1,000 items of food to be distributed to needy families across Reading by Readifood.

The reception class won the Key Stage 1 competition to bring in the most donations with 142 items, while Alliyah Kayum and Liam Basten collected a certificate on behalf of their class which collected 166 items, in the Key Stage 2 section.

Warings bakery, which has a branch in Prospect Street, Caversham, donated a loaf of bread large enough for every pupil to share a piece.

Meanwhile at Thameside Primary School, Year 5 youngsters shared the Harley Road school's harvest donations with the residents of nearby sheltered housing, Bristow Court, after presenting their own harvest assembly to their peers and parents.

Headteacher Helen Wallace said: "The children were keen to share the food donated for the Harvest Festival and thoroughly enjoyed meeting our neighbours at Bristow Court."

Eric Hillier, Bristow Court's sheltered housing officer, said: "I believe both the young people and the tenants enjoyed the visit. We were especially thankful for the wonderful harvest parcels which have now been distributed to all tenants."

Thameside youngsters hope to visit Bristow Court again for a Christmas carol concert.
