PUBLIC exhibitions and consultations take place this week in Whitley to find out what neighbours think about plans for the former Avenue Special School site.

Reading Borough Council holds an informal exhibition and consultation exercise at George Palmer Primary School, Northumberland Avenue, today (Thursday) from 5-8pm and again on Saturday from 10am-1pm.

The old school site has stayed empty since the original Avenue School moved to its new home in Tilehurst last summer, and the council is planning a mix of houses, flats and an extra-care housing complex for older people.

Extra-care housing offers older people owning or renting their own flats 24-hour care and support on site.

The council has applied for outline planning consent to identify the type of development acceptable to planners, including those features that need to be retained and enhanced.

More than 100 letters have gone out detailing the ideas and inviting the public to George Palmer School to inspect the plans in more detail, discuss the proposals with council officers and architects and comment on the private residential development and the extra care housing ideas.
