ALLOTMENT holders in Caversham held a barbecue to celebrate The Big Lunch.
Keen gardeners at the Oakley Road plots, including members of the Caversham Allotment Holders and Gardens Association, gathered to show off their produce, compare notes and tuck into the wonderful delights created from the fruit and vegetables they had grown, which was the theme for the day.
A scarecrow called Charlie was made from recycled materials and put up on the allotments by association secretary, Carol Wheeler, who organised the event after hearing about it from the Royal Horticultural Society.
The Big Lunch initiative tries to get British people talking to their neighbours again to garner a sense of community.
Around two million people across the country joined in with the event, including Caversham neighbours in Westfield Road, Charles Evans Way, Hemdean Road and Buxton Avenue.
Mrs Wheeler said: "We did get quite a lot of our new, young members getting involved.
"It was great because everyone got to talk to people from plots other than their immediate neighbours."
