WHITLEY Park Junior School this week appealled to the public for old school photographs and memories as it prepares to celebrate its 75th anniversary.

The school in Basingstoke Road opened on June 1, 1934 and the school is planning a series of events to mark the occasion, including a fun day and presenting each child at the school with a commemorative gift.

The school has sent an invite to former pupil Ricky Gervais, hoping he will visit the school, and are also looking forward to meeting ex-Chelsea player Dennis Brown who started off at Whitley Park and was in the school football team in 1955, and who has agreed to take part in the celebrations.

Year 6 teacher Helen Marshall said: "We are really appealing to anyone who went to Whitley Park Junior School, former staff or anyone who knows someone who was there to come forward with any photos or documents or who can share their memories.

"We want to build up a history of the school and have a lot of ideas. We've got copies of some of the first admission books and we know that the very first headteacher who opened the school in 1934 was called James Piper.

"We've got a new website and have set up a Facebook group and the children and staff are having a lot of fun thinking up ideas about how we can commemorate the 75th anniversary."
