DOUBLE Olympic Champion Lizzy Yarnold unveiled a brand new sports centre at the Duchess of Cambridge's former school.

Yarnold posed with photographs with pupils and cut the ribbon on St Andrew's state-of-the-art facility in Pangbourne.

The centre offers an array of sporting facilities, including a 25m indoor swimming pool with four lanes and a viewing gallery.

Yarnold said: "I am delighted to be able to open St Andrew’s Sports Centre.

"I am so pleased to learn that this amazing facility is being put to such good use by both the school and the children in the local community.

"I am passionate about encouraging children to lead an active life and to believe in themselves and I can see this is very evident at St Andrew’s."

Jon Bartlett, headmaster, added: "To have double Olympic Champion Lizzy Yarnold open our new Sports Centre is just fantastic.

"We wanted a person who is a great sporting role model - determined and ambitious - and Lizzy is that person.  She is a truly inspirational athlete and we are thrilled that she has been awarded the OBE in recognition of her hard work and achievements in sport.”

The new centre is based close to the artificial pitch which was opened by Kate Middleton in 2012.

It offers facilities for sports like badminton, netball, basketball, hockey and volleyball.

Felicity Rutland, chair of governors and deputy lieutenant for Berkshire, said: "We are pleased that St Andrew’s is able to provide children with so much opportunity – academically, musically, in arts and in sport.

" Our School Motto is ‘Altiora Petimus’, which means we strive for higher things and we believe our Sports Centre provides a great opportunity for each child to explore and extend their abilities.

" I am particularly pleased that we are able to extend these opportunities to the wider community.”
