COUNCILLORS are set to approve Mapledurham Playing Fields as the preferred site for the controversial Heights Free School.

Politicians and residents have been at loggerheads for several years after the Education Funding Authority submitted a bid to build a school on the land.

Neighbours say the land was designated for community use and a school would break the agreement.

However, one of the town’s biggest ever consultations revealed that a majority of residents thought the school should be built on the playing fields.

Now, Reading Borough Council, acting as trustees of the land, are set to approve the site.

A report reads: “(It is recommended that) the decision of the Local Planning Authority (LPA) to pass a resolution to grant planning consent for a new school at Mapledurham Playing Fields, subject to conditions; and the decision of the Secretary of State not to call in the determined planning application, be noted.”
