A TEACHING assistant at a special educational school is set to line-up against 11 time FA Cup winners Arsenal FC in an historic fixture tonight.

"Driven" Dan Spence has already achieved hero status at Brookfields School in Tilehurst for his work helping pupils.

The 27-year-old, who plays as a defender for National League side Sutton United, has also received plenty of plaudits away from school.

One stand-out moment came when he somehow managed to deny AFC Wimbledon's Chris Whelpdale with a delicately timed tackle, sparking United to go on and score three late goals and progress through to the next round.

His heroics helped Sutton draw Sky Bet Championship side Leeds United - who play in the same league as Reading FC - where they came out victorious once again.

Tonight they will face former cup-winners Arsenal, with the chance to progress to the quarter finals.

"We are thrilled for him," said Brandon Mills, acting head teacher at Brookfields.

"We are delighted for him and his team to be able to have this opportunity. We have got everything crossed for him."

Mr Spence began his footballing career with the Royals, but he was released in 2009.

He then spent time playing in Spain for Glenn Hoddle's Academy and also appeared for Woking, Salisbury City and Mansfield Town.

"We have a number of pupils who know him really well," added Mr Mills.

"They are all really routing for him and so are all the members of staff.

"All of them are really into football and this is a great opportunity for our children to really get involved."

Mr Spence has worked at the Sage Road school on and off for a number of years and was described as an outstanding employee.

The 27-year-old was given the day off to join his team-mates ahead of tonight's clash at Gander Green Lane.

"He is very driven," continued Mr Mills.

"Dan is very committed to all our pupils here.

"He really enjoys sharing his football skills skills with them, he often helps out with PE classes."
