RESIDENTS have led the tributes for a tragic young schoolboy after he died following a devatating accident at Topshop yesterday afternoon.

The 10-year-old, who was enjoying the first day of the half-term break, was rushed to the Royal Berkshire Hospital with serious injuries but he was sadly pronounced dead shortly afterwards.

It is not yet known exactly how the child came to his death, however police investigating the tragic incident confirmed it involved a piece of furniture at the Oracle-based store.

Neighbours have revealed their grief in the aftermath, and Alanna Quigley wrote: “Absolutely shocking news. Thoughts go out to all family and friends at such a sad time."

Nikki Ellis added: “Can't even begin to imagine how his family are feeling R.I.P. darling boy. Xx.”

Karen Streetly said: “So sad same age as my babyboy my thoughts are with him family I don’t know if i could cope x.”

Four police cars and three ambulances were parked at the end of Riverside on Bridge Street.  Officers remained on the scene for more than two hours as they investigated the scene of the accident.

A spokesman for Thames Valley Police confirmed last night the boy was declared dead as soon as he arrived at hospital.

The spokesman said: “On attendance they found that a 10-year-old boy had suffered serious head injuries after an incident involving store furniture.

"The boy was taken to the Royal Berkshire Hospital where sadly he was pronounced dead.

"His next of kin have been informed.”

Outside the closed shop police officers interviewed witnesses and ordered onlookers to keep moving as a large throng of people gathered outside the shutters of the multi-storey clothes shop.

A spokesman for South Central Ambulance Service added: "We received the call at 4.12pm to reports of a 12-year-old boy who was suffering a serious medical emergency.

"He was in a life-threatening condition.

"We sent three ambulances and two officers in a rapid response vehicle.”
