A MAN believed to be one of the first in the country to be convicted of 'revenge porn' was given a six month suspended sentence by magistrates' today.

Jason Asagba took intimate pictures and videos of a Reading woman and posted them on Facebook, as well as sending the graphic images to her family.

The offence took place just three days after the new legislation came in to force, and Asagba, of Chadwell Heath Lane, Romford, was arrested by Thames Valley Police.

He was charged with the offence of disclosing sexual photographs and films on May 15, and pleaded guilty at Reading Magistrates' Court the following day.

He appeared at the same court today, and was sentenced to six months in jail, suspended for 18 months.

The 21-year-old was also ordered to carry out 100 hours of unpaid community work, pay £300 in costs, and attend a Probation Service behaviour program.

Investigating officer, Detective Constable Steven Rose said: “This was very upsetting and distressing for the victim. However with the conviction and sentencing of Asagba I hope she can put this episode behind her.

“These new powers allow police and the courts to deal with anyone found committing these type of offences."

Alison Saunders, Director of Public Prosecutions, added: “Revenge pornography is a particularly distressing crime for the victim. It is a violation of trust between two people and its purpose is to publicly humiliate.

"The new offence has only been in force since April. Therefore, it is too early for us to be able to say what impact this is having on the number of prosecutions. However, anecdotally we are seeing more of these cases being brought to us by the police and it is clear that the new legislation is having an impact."
