A GROUP of friends who knit bunting to decorate Haverfordwest have clubbed together to raise money to fight a deadly disease which affected one of their members.

After Sally Yelland recovered from Bowel Cancer, Haverfordwest’s yarn bombers were inspired to raise money for a national charity which raises awareness about the disease.

The group holds a summer duck race as part of Haverfordwest Festival Week, and decided to give the £1,035 they raised from takings and donations toward Bowel Cancer UK.

“I was really humbled,” said Sally. “My aim is to make people aware of this disease.

“I wouldn’t have known about it unless I did a screening for it. So many people don’t do it but they really should. They could be living with bowel cancer but they don’t realise it.”

Usually the yarn bombers use all proceeds from the duck race to buy materials for their next display, but when Sally returned to the group after being given the all-clear earlier this year, they were inspired to help a greater cause.

Now Sally is determined to raise awareness about bowel cancer and what can be done to treat it.

“Bowel cancer is the second biggest killer cancer, but if you catch it early it can be treated with a lot of success,” she said.
