EMERGENCY services were called to the town centre earlier today after a crash involving a car and a bus.

Ambulances have been spotted on Bridge Street outside Reading Borough Council's offices.

Passers-by have indicated that a white BMW pulled in front of a bus, attempting to turn into Fobney Street.

Eye-witnesses on the scene told a Chronicle reporter that a young girl had been taken to hospital after suffering a head injury.

A spokesman for South Central Ambulance Service said: "We received an emergency 999 call at 11.40 with the caller reporting a collision between a bus and a car on the junction of Bridge Street and Fobney Street.

"We sent a rapid response vehicle, a paramedic team leader and an ambulance to the scene.

"There were more than 20 passengers on the bus but the only injury was to a baby who had sustained a head injury and after initial assessment was then taken to the Royal Berkshire Hospital."

Reading Chronicle:

The vehicle is thought to have collided with an Emerald bus at around 11.45am.

A spokesman for Reading Buses said: "I can confirm that one of our Emerald buses was involved in a collision with a vehicle.

"The bus has sustained a damaged panel and a smashed windscreen, but the driver is ok and the bus has been driven back to the depot.

"We don't believe that anyone on the bus has been injured, but we understand that a number of passengers have been checked over as a precaution.

"This is an ongoing investigation, and Reading Buses will liaise with the police and insurance companies to establish exactly what happened."

Thames Valley Police have been approached for comment.
