A SPORTY schoolboy has raised a huge sum for charity after discovering his mother had a brain tumour.

Oliver Shears took part in a duathlon challenge at Dinton Pastures, surrounded by his friends from Radstock Primary School.

More than £3,000 was raised for the Brain Tumour Charity, which has been supporting Oliver's mother Yvette during a tough time.

The family, from Lower Earley, were visiting Australia when the mother, 41, collapsed at Melbourne Airport.

Yvette said: "Ollie achieved everything he wanted and much much more. Everyone we know has come together for us and really made us feel loved.

"We have received more than 100 online messages and donations from as far and wide as Australia and South Africa.

"We have been truly truly humbled by how many people have helped Ollie with everything, from donations of money to donations of cake. You are all amazing."

Oliver, nine, was determined to fundraise for people who had been helping his mum and he organised a duathlon with help from Reading Rascals.

Messages of support have been pouring in from friends and family, as well as Team Sky and pop band McFly.

Yvette collapsed in front of her two children when the Shears family were on their way to visit a relative, who was completing her last round of chemotherapy.

Husband Mark said: "It was horrible. We were not allowed to fly her home and she was diagnosed with a brain tumour after being rushed to hospital.

"My whole family were out in Australia with us when it happened after we went out to celebrate my sister's good news.

"Oliver came up with the idea of hosting his own kids duathlon with all of his friends to raise funds for the people who helped his mummy."

The challenge was held after the Kids Dinton Duathlon 2018 and Oliver was joined by dozens of schoolfriends.
