A LAMPPOST which fell onto a busy motorway, blocking all three lanes, caused miles of traffic for commuters this morning (Thursday).
One motorist dubbed the tailbacks as 'carmageddon' as a massive queue of cars formed around the borough.
Reading Borough Council warned residents to avoid the motorway, but thousands of drivers were caught in the disruption.
One commuter told the Chronicle: "I feel like I've seen every corner of Berkshire today.
"It's like carmaggedon. It took me more than two hours to get from Bracknell to Reading.
"I tried taking different back roads but there was traffic everywhere."
The Chronicle understands a car hit a lamppost on the M4, causing it to topple over.
There has been a major incident on the M4 eastbound, between J11 (Reading) and J10. There are numerous lane closures on both sides of the carriageway (including westbound). Be aware traffic is diverting through Reading in both directions causing delays. #rdguk
