AN AMATEUR footballer who almost quit the beautiful game described the "incredible" moment he turned out at Wembley Stadium on Sunday.

Thatcham Town's Curtis Angell played 90 minutes at the national stadium as the Kingfishers lifted the FA Vase trophy for the first time in the club's history.

As previously reported by the Chronicle, full back Angell nearly quit football last year but had his head turned by Thatcham boss Danny Robinson.

He became a mainstay in Robinson's plans at Thatcham and enjoyed incredible scenes of celebration as the Kingfishers beat Stockton Town in the FA Vase final.

And Angell admitted he was thrilled at his decision to pursue his footballing passion.

"It was incredible, a dream come true," he said.

"I was nervous at the start because of the occasion.

"I'm back into it now. A few players got around me at the start of the season.

"Ekow Elliott has been brilliant, he told me to keep at it. Now it's all paid off.

"We had unbelievably support. At the start we had two men and his dog and now we have thousands of people.

"The fans kept pushing us on, they were so loud."

The players and managers headed back to Thatcham for a post-match party after the final whistle on Sunday.

Angell has planned a week's holiday in the USA before returning to football later in the summer.

He added: "I'm off to Miami for a week with my Mrs. She'll probably want to go shopping and I just want to chill out on the beach.

"But other than that it's back to work and back to pre-season training.

"It's massive (winning the FA Vase), it will keep the club going. Hopefully we can kick on from here.

"We managed to win promotion and this is just a massive bonus."
