THE FORCE'S heroes were honoured at an awards ceremony for going above and beyond the call of duty to protect their community.

Police constable Tom Walters from the problem solving team in Reading won the Berkshire Community Officer award for 2018.

Now in its 17th year, the annual awards recognise outstanding contributions from Thames Valley Police's neighbourhoods team.

PC Walters received his prize for establishing the mini police unit at Katesgrove Primary School.

He said: "I was shocked and surprised on receiving the award. I know some brilliant officers who deserve this recognition as well.

"I feel very honoured to receive the award though, I still do not know who nominated me."

A record number of nominations were received from members of the public, community groups and fellow police officers.

The nomination for PC Walters commended his positive influence on 700 pupils ang was described as a great ambassador for the force.

Mini police take part in litter picking sessions as part of the Reading Adopt Your Street campaign.
