RESIDENTS are being urged to come together and celebrate this year's royal wedding by holding street parties across the town.

Reading Borough Council will freeze the usual road closure fees to neighbours can celebrate with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.

The fees will be removed for the weekends of May 19 and 20, June 2 and 3, 16 and 17, 23 and 24 and June 30 and July 1.

Prince Harry will tie the knot on the first weekend while the second coincides with the official dates for this year's Big Lunch.

Meanwhile, the third weekend is for those who want to celebrate the Big Lunch outside of Ramadan while the final weekends are for anyone who wants to get involved with this year's Great Get Together.

Councillor Tony Page said: "People are often so busy it can be difficult to find time to catch up with friends and neighbours.

“The annual Big Lunch is an ideal opportunity for communities to get-together and the Council is keen to promote that, as ever, by waiving the usual road closure fee.

"This year we will be extending that offer over five weekends to ensure residents can take part in celebrating the Big Lunch, the Royal Wedding, the Great Get Together and providing dates outside of Ramadan."

Residents must apply to hold a street party on their roads by no later than April 20.

Cllr Page added: "I hope residents will once again come together and hold some great street parties this summer – but remember the closing date for applications."
