CAMPAIGNERS lit up the site of a sunken swimming pool to mark the anniversary of its opening this week.

Reading Borough Council shut down Arthur Hill Pool in Reading last December because the site became too costly to run.

On Tuesday, campaigners battling to have the pool re-opened placed sparklers and candles around the derelict site to remind the borough council their fight is ongoing.

Peter Burt of the Arthur Hill campaign, said: “As well as celebrating the heritage of Arthur Hill Pool, the event served to remind Reading Borough Councillors that the Arthur Hill campaign has not faded away and that there is still a sizeable body of local people who are determined to see swimming reinstated in East Reading”.

Reading Borough Council's policy committee turned down a bid to reopen the pool in April from Arthur Hill Save Our Swimming (SOS).

More than £11,000 was raised as part of the application and SOS decided to donate the funds to local schools to allow them to attend swimming facilities after school.
