TWO burglars have been jailed for a total of 52 months after stealing a First World War medal.

Mark Lewington, of Beecham Road, Reading, and Peter Cripps, of Royal Avenue, Calcot, were sentenced at Reading Crown Court on October 6.

The duo carried out a raid at a home on Turners Drive, Thatcham on July 29 last year, where they stole two games consoles, video games, a Samsung tablet, jewellery and a First World War medal.

They entered the property through an unlocked conservatory door.

Lewington, 28, and Cripps, 37, admitted to one count of burglary and one count of handling stolen goods and were convicted at the same court on September 4.

They also attempted to steal the owners' car but were unable to start it.

They were also caught handling stolen goods at a property in which Lewington was staying, following a burglary which had occurred in Grassmead, Thatcham.

Stolen items including a laptop and jewellery were found at the property.

Investigating officer Detective Inspector Mark Carolan, said: "This sentence shows how seriously Thames Valley Police takes burglary offences.

"Lewington and Cripps carried out a burglary and were in possession of stolen goods. They will know be spending a significant time in prison.

"This case should serve as a warning to other people who carry out burglaries. We will work to find you, arrest you and secure convictions."
