AN APPEAL has been made for the personal stories of members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transsexual and queer (LGBTQ+) community on the anniversary of a landmark report.

September 4 marks 60 years since the publication of the Wolfenden Report, which resulted in the partial decimalisation of homosexuality ten years later.

The report was named after former University of Reading Vice Chancellor Sir John (later Lord) Wolfenden, who chaired the ‘Report of the Departmental Committee on Homosexual Offences and Prostitution’.

He was Vice-Chancellor at the University of Reading from 1950 to 1964.

Now the university and Reading based LGBTQ+ group Support U are collecting stories and recollection of those who have experienced discrimination first hand, and the positive difference law changes have had to their lives in the past 50 years.

Monday’s anniversary comes two days after Reading Pride.

Support U’s partnership with Reading Buses means many will have seen Lord Wolfenden pictured on the side of buses over the weekend.

To contribute a story or recollections, email history@supportu.org.uk

The stories, which can be submitted anonymously, will be read by an actor for a documentary produced by the charity.
