Met Office says there could be a north-south weather divide this weekend as Hurrican Gert moves over the Atlantic

Whilst the north could see strong winds and heavy rain, the south would get a blast of warm air, bringing tropical temperatures. 

Hurricane Gert, the second hurricane of the season in the Atlantic Ocean, is currently off the eastern coast of the US and north of Bermuda.

It is expected to track eastwards before losing strength and being absorbed into a low pressure system.

After weeks of unsettled weather across most of Britain, the low pressure system is set to bring more summery conditions for central and southern areas from Sunday.

Met Office forecaster Luke Miall said.

He said: "At the moment we might see a bit of a North-South split developing.

"The wet and windy weather will most likely be to the north and west of the UK, so Scotland, Northern Ireland, north west England and North Wales will have a wet and windy weekend.

"Nothing severe is expected but given this August so far, it's just a bit disappointing, since the kids have broken up, it's turned a bit more unsettled."
