COMMUNITY campaigners' battle to have public toilets in their village looks to have paid off.

Action for Pangbourne Toilets Community Trust announced this week the Station Road toilets will re-open in September.

The group, which has spent months raising cash to fund the project, has enough money to keep the loos open for the first 12 months.

Councillors decided to flush the toilets for the last time back in May 2015 and villagers have campaigned to have them re-opened ever since.

The trust is now in the process of finalising a 99-year lease with West Berkshire Council and plans are underway for the grand re-opening.

Sir Brian Hoskins, chair of trustees, said: "It is an exciting time for the Trust and its supporters and we are looking forward to re-opening this important facility for the many visitors to our wonderful village.

"Everyone involved has worked very hard and we are grateful to all the local organisations and residents who have donated to our cause so far."

The community trust will fund the maintenance and running costs of the toilets for the first 12 months.

However, they need residents to continue to donate funds to keep the loos running in the long term.

Sir Hoskins added: "We need to raise funds on an ongoing basis, so we welcome the opportunity to attract online donations and match funding via Greenham Trust.

"We hope this will encourage people who live further afield to make a donation to help support the toilets in the longer term."

A fundraising page has been set up and more than £11,000 has been raised so far.
