A MAN has been released under investigation after a merciless beating on Christchurch Bridge.

The victim was kicked in the head several times on the pedestrian bridge on Saturday (July 1) evening.

Brave members of the public intervened after the 33-year-old man became unconscious and the offender fled the scene after being abusive towards good samaritans.

Thames Valley Police arrested a 24-year-old man from Caversham on suspicion of assault in connection with the incident the following day.

He has been released as police continue with their investigation.

The victim was rushed to hospital and is currently in a stable condition.

Detective Constable Amy Hickman-Holden, investigating officer, said: “We are continuing to investigate the circumstances of this serious assault.

"We believe the victim was helped by several members of the public while he was on the ground, unconscious and other members were subjected to verbal abuse from the offender.

"I would like to speak to anyone who has not already spoken to police who may have information about what happened.

“Anyone with any information should call us via our non-emergency number, 101.”
