A BABY cow required the help of four fire crews and emergency services this morning after getting stuck in the River Kennet.

Crews from Caversham Road, Whitley Wood and Dee Road were all called out to the incident, along with an off-road vehicle from Maidenhead and Thames Valley Police.

Fire fighters arrived at around 8am on Burghfield Road, by the Cunning Man pub, to pull the animal out of the water.

The specialist animal and water rescue team were deployed, but by the time they arrived they were unable to locate the calf.

They were on the scene until around 8.30am and have spoken to the farmer to decide if any further investigation is needed.

A spokesman for Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service said: "We were called at 7:52 to reports of a calf in the water in the River Kennet near Burghfield Road.

"Crews from Dee Road and Whitley Wood fire stations were mobilised, along with our water rescue unit from Caversham Road Fire Station and an off-road vehicle from Maidenhead.

"They were unable to locate the calf, but crews believe that the calf may have climbed out of the water and rejoined the herd.

"The incident commander has since spoken to the farmer, who will check the herd and let us know if further action is required.

"Crews were on the scene until 08:29."

Thames Valley Police have been approached for comment.
