"At around 5.55pm on Tuesday on Ambrook Road, a man in his late twenties was involved in an altercation with three other me," said the spokesman.

"The victim received several stab wounds, and was taken to the John Radcliffe Hospital where he remains with serious but non-life threatening injuries."

Police have urged nearby residents not to panic and officers have upped their presence in the area.

Investigating officer, detective inspector Dave Turton, added: "We are appealing for witnesses in connection with this incident.

"We have arrested a number of people, but would appeal to anyone with information to come forward."
