A MAN has been arrested after a three-hour stand off at a mini market in Newtown.

Thames Valley Police (TVP) were called to Yuvraj Mini Market on Manchester Road at around 6.40pm on Tuesday after reports of a man who was threatening to harm himself.

When they arrived, the shop was barricaded and a man was allegedly threatening to cause criminal damage.

Jagdeep Deo, 31, of Manchester Road, was charged by TVP with threatening to damage or destroy property on Wednesday in connection with the incident.

He has been bailed to appear at Reading Magistrates' Court on Friday, April 21.

After spending nearly three hours attempting to reason with the man who had locked himself inside, he finally opened the shutters shortly after 9pm.

Officers confirmed no one was injured as a result of the incident, although a crew from Caversham Road Fire Station were called to assist the police.

A spokesman for TVP said: "A 31-year-old man has been charged by following an incident on Tuesday evening.

"Jagdeep Deo, of Manchester Road, was charged on Wednesday with the offence of threat to damage or destroy property.

"He has been bailed to appear at Reading Magistrates’ Court on 21 April.

"The charge is in connection with an incident on Manchester Road, when a man threatened to damage a shop."
